Why did a study suggest drinking half a glass of water before kissing?
A study by Columbia University has suggested that celiac patients drink water before kissing to avoid gluten contamination.
When you truly love someone, you are ready to do anything for them. You forget everything and express your love in different ways.
This also includes kissing your partner. There is a saying that love makes you forget everything. However, a new study from 2026 suggests that even if you forget everything before expressing your love, you should not forget to drink water.
This is not a suggestion to hinder someone's love, but rather a way to avoid the spread of harmful chemicals. That too, not for everyone, but for people with a specific health problem.
Celiac patients need water before kissing
A recent study conducted at Columbia University tested whether gluten is transferred from one person to another through kissing. Gluten is a type of protein found in grains such as wheat and barley.
If someone has celiac disease, consuming gluten can be harmful to them. In this disease, the body starts to damage the small intestine after eating gluten. Therefore, celiac patients should avoid consuming gluten.
According to the report of this study published in the journal Gastroenterology, 10 couples were included in the research. In each couple, one partner had celiac disease and one did not.
The partner without celiac disease ate saltine crackers made from wheat. Then they kissed their partner. Then they were tested to see if the gluten was transferred to the partner.
In 90 percent of all samples, low levels of gluten were found, but this was not at a level that would be harmful to those with celiac disease. In two of the 20 kisses, high levels of gluten were found. Which was harmful to celiac patients.
The gluten status of the partner was also checked after drinking water and kissing. This showed very pleasing results. People who did not have celiac disease and those who consumed gluten were asked to drink water before kissing. In this, not a single sample exceeded the 20 parts per million mark. In 60 percent of the samples, gluten was not detected at all.
This study is said to have played an important role in eliminating the hesitation and fear in couples with celiac disease.
A previous study had shown that 39 percent of people with celiac disease hesitate to kiss their partners due to fear. The study found that many behaved based on advice given online.
In which measures such as brushing teeth, carrying mouthwash, and urging their partner to eat only gluten-free foods on the days they were together were adopted. The previous study concluded that none of this advice was based on scientific evidence.
The study, the researchers said, has helped to create a clearer picture of the spread of gluten through kissing and its risks.
“We can now inform patients about the quantitative risk of gluten exposure through kissing so that they can maintain intimacy without fear.” The researchers wrote, “It doesn’t take much, half a glass of water.”
Experts recommend avoiding kissing when you have other viral infections that are spread through saliva.
